Dutch Barn Preservation Society

Dedicated to the Study and Preservation
of New World Dutch Barns

The New World Dutch Barn was the first truly American building form. Its roots are European, from traditional Dutch and German timber framing, yet by the end of the seventeenth century, it had evolved into a new form, enabled by vast forests of giant trees, that would be the dominate barn style of New York and northern New Jersey well into the nineteenth century.

Now, two centuries beyond their reign, hundreds of Dutch Barns still attract us with their beauty, and simple elegance.  They remain standing, tangible links to our first colonial families and proud testaments to the craftsmanship of their builders.

The Dutch Barn Preservation Society has been working for fifteen years to save these American treasures. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to documenting the remaining barns and promoting their maintenance and restoration.  We have an annual grant program to help barn owners with repairs. We offer educational programs; help historical societies create barn museums and help historic sites replace their lost barns.

There is a lot of life left in these barns, and we will keep working to see that they are appreciated, and enjoyed.   Please join us.
